March 18th to 24th is Meat Free Week Australia. The online fundraiser is aimed at reducing the demand on Australia’s meat industry by encouraging consumers to focus on a plant based diet for 1 week. In order to keep up with the growing demand of animal-based products, two-thirds of the worlds meat is produced through some form of factory farming. As humans we are so detached from the realities of where our meat actually comes from and the ethical issues associated with the production. People need to be more aware that every time they purchase a non-certified organic product, they are supporting the production process associated with that item.
With growing research into animal protein, documentaries such as Forks Over Knives claim that the majority, if not all, degenerative disease found within humans today can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our current consumption of processed and animal-based foods. The documentary goes on to link our growing consumption of animal products to the increase in disease and illness among humans. With information like this, teamed with education into the factory farming process, I hope more people will get on board with causes such as this and reduce their impact on the meat industry.
